Alfonso Martínez Arias (Madrid, 1955, Spain) considers himself a biologist interested in everything he does not know. He likes parting from ignorance and finding something, always with the curiosity and the desire to discover as inherent characteristics. With this vision he started studying the cellular interactions and signals of flies, specifically the Drosophila fly. He discovered amongst other things, the aspects related with the wingless gene.

He has taken his career like a journey, an adventure towards discovery. Using as base the laboratory from the Department of Genetics form the University of Cambridge for his investigations since 1978, he is internationally accepted for his contributions on developmental biology. However, he has never dissociated himself from the scientific activity in the Spanish field and participates actively in the Center for Genomic Regulation of Barcelona (CRG).

His latest interest is centred on embryonic stem cells in mice. New challenges, new adventures and most probably new discoveries.
