Miguel Beato (Salamanca, 1939) graduated in Medicine at the University of Barcelona in 1962. Due to family ties he left to continue studying in Germany, where he obtained his PhD from the University of Göttingen in 1967. He expanded his training studying biochemistry and molecular biology at the same German university and also at the University of Marburg, as well as taking a period of three years to carry out research at the University of Columbia, in New York (1970-1973).

He spent several years in Germany as a professor and researcher, where he ended up founding and directing (from 1990 to 1995) at the Institute of Molecular Biology and Tumour Research, IMT at the University of Marburg. In 2003, however, he returned for good to Spain convinced that he still had many things to contribute to science and society.

And that is how it has been. Currently he is the director at the Centre of Genomic Regulation of Barcelona, whose objective is to “promote basic research of excellence in the genomic and proteomic field”. Specifically, Beato has centred his research in the study of chromatin and gene expression.

The results of his research have been published in more than 200 articles in specialised journals, which have given him international recognition. Since 1980 he is an elected member of EMBO and of several scientific councils at European centres. He is a doctor honoris causa at the University Pablo Olavide of Seville and in 2008 he received the Prize from the Fundació Catalana per a la Recerca i la Innovació.
