World Brain Awareness Week 2010

One more year, Barcelona celebrates the World Brain Awareness Week 2010 in its 15th anniversary. Between 15 and 21 March, the Barcelona Science program, along with the Centre for Genomic Regulation, the Barcelona Institute of Education and the collaboration of numerous research centres, organizes a special program for schools and proposals for the general public, adding to this initiative, which emerged from the researchers themselves and which followed in over 72 countries, with the aim of publicizing the efforts being made in the study of human brain to understand its operation.

The naturalist Cuvier and the philosopher Hegel: a tale of two parallel lives

The mundane nature, ideological dogmatism and a degree of unpopularity are some common points for the biography of the naturalist Cuvier and the philosopher Hegel, as pointed out in the book "The parallel lives of Georges Cuvier and Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel. Nature and philosophy ", a study carried out by the Professor of the Department of Animal Biology Adrià Casinos, an expert in biomechanics and in studies on evolutionary theories. The book, published recently in the series "Monographs", from the Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas (CSIC), focuses on the biographical crosses and spatial and temporal coincidence of the lives of Cuvier and Hegel, two reference figures in the world of science and philosophical thought.

"Connected to Life", a photographic exhibition on renal patients

From the 8th of March to the 9th of May at the lobby of the Hospital Clinic of Barcelona, the photographic exhibition "Connected to Life" can be visited, a testimony of the everyday life of renal patients through the photos by Tino Soriano. With this photographic exhibition, the Catalan centre (a referent in an integrated approach of renal disease and transplantation) aims to raise awareness about a disease that affects 9.3% of the Spanish population.

An exhibition on the Empress Sissi work reflects how the print media of the time worked

The situation in which the print media in the second half of the nineteenth Century found itself is the starting point of a photo exhibition which includes various images of the Austrian Empress Sissi. The Government will create a web of international dissemination of Catalan Music

The Department of Culture and Media of the Generalitat of Catalonia will create a website of international dissemination of Catalan music. The culture secretary, Eduard Voltas, explained that this website will bring together all the content, resources, online communities and services related to the music of Catalonia. The portal, according to Voltas, aims to "create a virtual community of people interested in music made in Catalonia and a platform for recruitment of Catalan groups. In addition to information about groups and artists, it will also contain video clips, discography, news and dates of concerts, and will enable to buy music by these performers through the network.

Establishing the Network of Museums and Archeological Sites in Catalonia

The Regional Minister for Culture and the Media, Joan Manuel Tresserras, presided yesterday over the signing of the agreement for the establishment of the Network of Museums and Archaeological Sites of Catalonia, which was also attended by representatives of six Catalan museums. The network enables to articulate common policies for the protection, dissemination, training and revitalization of local cultural heritage items contained in the seven museums.

Argus us launched, the new catalogue of Catalan public libraries

The Department of Culture and Media of the Generalitat of Catalonia has launched Argus a tool that provides service to 142 public libraries and unifies 4 pre-existing catalogs. It also increases the number of documents on loan and its term. From the 1 March, the people who use the 142 public libraries in Girona, Lleida, Tarragona and Terres de l'Ebre and six towns of Barcelona, can access the document collections of these libraries via Argus.
