When did the first ‘modern’ men arrive at the Iberian Peninsula?

An investigation by archaeologists of the Archaeological group of the Centre of Studies of the Archaeological Heritage of the Prehistory of the Autonomous University of Barcelona (CEPAP-UAB) at the site Cova Gran (Lleida) has fuelled the scientific debate on the appearance of the first 'modern' men at the Iberian Peninsula and their possible connection with the disappearance of the Neanderthals. The samples taken from Cova Gran dated by Carbon 14 relate to the time between 34,000 and 32,000 years to position temporarily when there was this biological replacement in the Western Mediterranean, although the study relativizes the validity of the carbon-14 technique for dating the materials from the period of transition from the Middle to the Upper Palaeolithic (40,000 to 30,000 years). The results also reinforce the hypothesis that there was no interaction or coexistence between the species.

New alterations found in young adults with type 2 diabetes

Diet and aerobic exercise are highly effective for the treatment of type 2 diabetes, but not for obese subjects that have developed the disease when very young. A study at the Institute for Research in Biomedicine (IRB Barcelona) and Trinity College in Dublin demonstrates that obese subjects between 18 and 25 years of age carry mitochondrial proteins and genes that work abnormally and that these anomalies contribute to generating insulin resistance and a reduced response to physical exercise. Produced by the American Diabetes Association, the journal ‘Diabetes Care’, which disseminates the clinical studies of greatest relevance, will publish the results of this research in its March issue.

Barcelona will host this year, from 15 to 18 March, the 'eHealth Week 2010', an initiative that welcomes for the first time the High Level Ministerial Conference on 'eHealth' (High Level eHealth Conference ) and the World Conference and Exhibition of Health IT (WoHIT). 'The eHealth week 2010' promises to be the most prestigious event of the year at European level in the field of electronic health and is expected to draw over 2,500 attendees from around the world and more than 75 IT companies in the International Convention Centre of Barcelona (CCIB).
